Job Summary:

Under general supervision and according to policies and procedures, microscopically evaluates gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytologic specimens, assists clinical departments with fine needle aspirates and participates in quality control and quality assurance activities.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Verifies patient name and accession number on slides and requisitions with computer for completeness and accuracy of data entry prior to microscopic evaluation.

  • Documents errors on data entry error log

  • Evaluates a minimum of 75 gynecologic full slide and/or computer- assisted gynecologic slide reviews per 8 hour day. Should not exceed a total of 80/160 slides of manual reviews/computer–assisted reviews respectively in a 24 hour period or as determined by the cytology technical supervisor.

  • Performs microscopic evaluation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens to detect the presence or absence of normal/abnormal cell patterns and microorganisms, identifies significant entities and determines whether a case requires further review by a pathologist.

  • Marks all abnormal cytology slides as described in accordance with department polices and procedures, separates slides and corresponding requisitions for cases that need further review, and distributes these cases to the cytology supervisor or pathologist.

  • Prepares electronic cytology reports for each case according to established laboratory policies and procedures.


Bachelors degree

Current CA Cytotechnlogist license, ASCP Certification

Preferred three years experience

Knowledge and practice of universal precautions policies related to handling of potentially infectious agents.
