Sutter Health Assistant Nurse Manager - L&D - Full Time - Varied Shifts in Berkeley, California


The Assistant Nurse Manager for Labor & Delivery reports to the Department Nurse Manager. The Assistant Nurse Manager assists the Nurse Manager in supervision of daily department operations, staff supervision, project management, staff and patient education, and the supervision, coordination and evaluation of all department functions. The Assistant Nurse Manager will perform other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager. The Assistant Nurse Manager will assist in activities to provide cost-effective and high quality care according to the policies, procedures and standards set at ABSMC. The Assistant Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who possesses advanced knowledge of local, state, federal and other health care regulations; and advanced clinical knowledge and skills. He/she will be responsible for assisting in developing and implementing changes in policies, practices, and standardized procedures based upon input from staff and administration, while working in conjunction with the Quality Department and Accreditation and Risk Management Department to remain congruent with current laws and regulatory standards while promoting optimal patient care. The Assistant Nurse Manager will also be responsible for acting as a role model and resource/consultant for staff development. The Assistant Nurse Manager will be a contributor with assisting in developing/revising/implementing hospital-wide policies and procedures, related forms, and MD orders which follow all regulatory guidelines on an organizational level.

This position will cover off-shifts and some weekends.



  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field preferred or in-progress.


  • Progressive nursing leadership as charge nurse or supervisory role in a clinical heath care setting is preferred or has lead a team in unit improvement

  • 3 years current experience in medical-surgical nursing or related area specialty preferred; will consider applicant with greater than 1 year experience in specialty.

  • Familiarity with agency and regulatory compliance standards in acute healthcare setting.

  • Prior experience working in a labor union environment, with an understanding of contractual issues and terms, as related to hiring, staging, scheduling issues preferred

  • Staffing and scheduling experience that includes utilization of acuity and productivity systems and measurement tools for reliability.

  • Performance Improvement; experience with collecting and analyzing data and presenting.

  • Experience in survey protocols on an organizational level (Joint Commission, State, etc).

  • Experience in development and implementation of policies and procedures on an organizational level using evidence based practice.

  • Experience in survey protocols on an organizational level (Joint Commission, State, etc)

  • Experience in interpretation of regulatory language, including having knowledge in regulation requirements on an organizational level.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, Conflict resolutions, negotiation and delegation.

  • Excellent writing, planning, computer and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work in a self-motivated, independent capacity essential.

  • Able to work all shifts subject to directive of Nurse Manager

  • Familiarity with critical thinking, characteristics of the adult learner, adult education principles, learning styles and teaching methods.

  • Advanced knowledge of appropriate local, state, federal and other health care regulations and legal regulations and requirements of specialty.


  • Knowledgeable about healthcare law, Title 22, Joint Commission, EMTALA and federal, state and local regulation and standards.

  • Ability to read, write, understand, and follow English verbal and written instructions.

  • Demonstrates knowledge in clinical nursing and administration (to include but not limited to: Clinical Practice Management, Personnel Management, Fiscal Management, Environmental Management, and Performance Improvement).

License, certification and/or registration

  • Current license to practice nursing in California

  • Certifications: Required: BLS,

  • ACLS for areas where this is required (Critical Care, telemetry)

  • Specialty certification acquired within the first year
