The staff nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for assuring competent, compassionate and cost effective patient care from admission through discharge.


Minimum Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing. BSN Preferred. Current California RN license required. Current (BCLS) Basic Life Support Certification.

Staff Nurse I: Entry level position for a registered nurse with limited experience, or less than six months clinical experience, or inactive clinical experience for five years. Interim Permit or Current California RN license required.

Staff Nurse II: Minimum 1 year current experience in area of specialty. Current California RN license required.

Other Qualifications: Able to communicate clearly and effectively in English. Able to clearly demonstrate knowledge of nursing process and nursing theory. Able to effectively present ideas. Demonstrates leadership capabilities, good interpersonal skills and a team player.

Unit Specific Qualifications: Certification in Mental Health-psychiatric Nursing preferred.

Unit Specific Requirements: A minimum of 12 months of recent acute care psychiatric nursing experience. Absence of physical limitations in pre-employment screening that prevent full participation in the care of potentially dangerous and assaultive patients. Ability to assume the role of Relief Charge Nurse in the absence of the Charge Nurse. Those with a history of being diagnosed as chemically dependent or having had a history of treatment for chemical dependency must have a minimum of two years of recovery from substance abuse prior to applying for work in Mental Health Services. In addition, these persons are encouraged to continue in a community program of recovery or counseling while working as a staff member in Mental Health. Anyone with a history of hospitalization at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center inpatient or outpatient programs for a mental illness should have two years of recovery before applying for a job in Mental Health Services.

Unit Specific Competencies: Completion of a hospital approved course on the management of assaultive behavior within three months of employment with an annual recertification. Completion of a mental health services approved training program on suicide assessment within one month of employment with an annual recertification.

It is the intent of the Medical Center to hire permanent Registered Nurses into all vacant and newly posted positions requiring nursing licensure. Current Registered Nurses employed by the Medical Center may apply for permanent vacancy or newly-created position and shall be given preference in filling such vacancy on seniority basis, provided: (a) the Nurse is qualified to fill the vacant position, and (b) approval of the application will not adversely affect patient care.

If, during the seven (7) day posting period, there is no application for the permanent vacancy or newly-created position by any full-time, regular part-time, short-hour or casual Registered Nurses employed by the Medical Center, the Medical Center may fill the position from any source.
