The Endoscopy Registered Nurse is directly responsible for patient care during endoscopy procedures and indirectly responsible through coordination and information sharing of both pre- and post-procedure care. The RN will assist the physician during the procedure. The RN serves as a role model and mentor in the development of clinical skills, communication skills, problem-solving, critical thinking, assessment and team work. The RN observes, evaluates and monitors the delivery of care and services and recommends changes in systems and processes to remove barriers in providing efficient, cost effective care.

Qualifications

Knowledge of: Nursing care plan development, patient/family education, and helping individuals and groups take steps to improve or maintain their health.

Ability to: accept constructive and instructive criticism and implement corrective action. Ability to perform responsibilities with a bio, psycho, social and technical approach incorporating those theories with the learned principles underlying treatment and nursing care. Ability to receive and give direction and to identify and use proper chain of command.

Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Minimum of three (3) years endoscopy experience. Education - Equivalent to BSN or related field preferred. Documentation of current CA/RN license, BLS certification required, and ACLS certification preferred..

Other: Performs pre-admission phone calls to patients to obtain health information and makes recommendations on surgery center appropriateness when needed. Reviews pre-procedure patient information including H&P and consent. Assesses patient upon admission. Remains with patient throughout the patient's stay in procedure room. Performs duties of patient advocate. Plans and assigns personnel fairly and efficiently. Trains and mentors new personnel. Acts as team leader during procedures. Plans and implements patient education throughout the procedure. Reports procedure events, including pertinent historical data, to receiving nurse in PACU. Reports significant issues directly to Director of Nursing.
