Job Summary :

The Nurse Practitioner, as a Medical Staff Allied Health Professional, performs medical evaluations and provides consultation to all new & contracted employees. Evaluates and treats Sutter Health and Worker's Compensation employees injured at work or exposed to communicable disease or chemical hazards at work. Collaborates with other health care professionals in assessing and managing health care problems, maintaining continuity of care.

The Nurse Practitioner(NP) is responsible for providing medical care services in an ambulatory care setting working under the supervision of a physician, has primary responsibility for the medical issues of the department as well as employer and patient satisfaction. Provides direct patient care for patients: coordinates the delivery of services with employers and management team; facilitates employee health programs, blood borne pathogen counseling and workplace clinics. The NP is concurrently responsible for the development, implementation and on-going evaluation of medical care policies and procedures in conjunction with the Medical Director. They work cooperatively with licensed, administrative and support staff to ensure the on-going operation of the department. The NP directly supervises health care professionals and support staff in compliance with the state of California Nurse Practice Act, certification and standards. Is directly responsible for quality patient care.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • People - While maintaining employee confidentiality, collaborates with the health care team and department leadership according to the facility Standards to enhance employee health, Worker's Compensation and primary care - promote a positive work environment and maintains professionalism and quality care in all circumstances.

  • Quality - Provides collaborative, evidence based and accurate evaluation, assessment, diagnosis, testing and interventions to employees and patients which comply with national/facility standards and within scope of licensure. Promotes health and safety in the work place and directs/assists/supports patients in achieving optimal health and wellness. Communicates with patients and completes documentation per Documentation Standards.

  • Demonstration of knowledge of the developmental stages of the neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.

  • Community - Promotes a positive relationship between Sutter Health and the community.

  • Finance - Utilizes resources to deliver quality assessment and care in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner.

  • Growth - Initiates and directs medical and nursing care to achieve optimal employee and patient health. Directs and guides the RN’s, LVN’s and MAs in the department.

  • Service - Provides employee health services according to the Sutter Difference standards and activities, ensuring the best experience. Conducts annual communicable disease screenings as directed by regulatory agencies and hospital committees.

  • Thorough knowledge of Employee Health and Worker's Compensation and related diagnostic testing and follow-up (DOT Testing, audiometric, medications, treatment modalities, and employee physicals).

  • Knowledge of California Worker's Compensation Laws; Cal-OSHA; modified work programs; American's with Disabilities Act; Blood Borne Pathogens Standards and Rehab Act.

On-Call/Standby required - calls only on a rotating weekly schedule (after hours every 5-7 weeks.



  • Must obtain medical staff privileges within 90 days of accepting position.

  • Must have CA state Nurse Practitioner - NP license.

  • Nurse Practitioner Furnishing - NPF required.

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse - COHN preferred.

  • Experience as a nurse practitioner preferred.

  • Novice nurse practitioner must have experience in specialty area within the last 3 years.

  • Experience in the field of occupational health is preferred.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.


  • Must understand, speak and write fluent English.

  • Able to speak other languages highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with California workers’ compensation law, Cal-OSHA, modified work programs, Americans with Disability Act is highly desirable, achieving proficiency within 6 months of hire.

  • Prioritizes and manages multiple demands in an ever changing environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
