POSITION SUMMARY:

The physician assistant with their first assist credentials will work directly with Neurosurgeon. The duties include a 50/50 split between the OR and clinic. Clinic is held at the Palo Alto Medication Foundation Mountain View, CA location. Primary inpatient responsibilities and surgeries are located 1.5 miles away at Silicon Valley's state-of-the-art hospital, El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA. Typically, the candidate will spend two days in the clinic seeing patients and two days in the OR assisting. Candidate will provide surgical services as a first assistant on neurosurgical cases in the operating room. Surgical procedures include craniotomies (brain tumors and traumatic injuries), shunts, degenerative spine conditions (disc herniation, spinal stenosis, vertebra misalignment, sciatica), spinal tumors and lesions, traumatic injuries/fractures to the head and neck. In addition, candidate will assist supervising physician with the minimal patient rounding routinely during weekdays. Inpatient duties include initial assessment, documentation in EHR, dictation of discharge summary, clarifying treatment and/or discharge planning. Occasionally, candidate may be required to assist in evaluation and management of patients in Emergency Room and on surgical floor at request of the supervising physician. Clinic duties include, but are not limited to, seeing office patients and completing a thorough history and physical examination; presenting the patient to attending physician, if needed; helping to formulate treatment plans; ordering appropriate radiographic studies; performing office procedure; evaluating post-operative patients and doing routine follow-up visits; returning phone calls and messages from patients; handling prescription refills; reviewing radiographic reports and laboratory reports for abnormalities; helping triage attending physician's surgical referrals. A major role will be as patient advocate in the medical care system, serving as confidant, advisor and liaison between patients and attending physician. Candidates must have excellent communication skills and be efficient with time management. Neurosurgical or ortho spine experience is preferred but, not required. PA practice is per California Physician Assistant regulations and the delegation of service agreement between PA(s) and the supervising physician(s).

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education, including Licensure / Certification / Registration

  • Current CA Physician Assistant license required

  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers (AHA) required

  • Current DEA License required

  • National certification required

  • CAPA Controlled Substance Certification preferred

  • ACLS preferred

Experience

  • 6 months related clinical experience preferred
