The Cancer Genetics Counselor is responsible for providing cancer genetics services to patients referred to the Program who may be at risk for a hereditary cancer syndrome. The program exists at both the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center (Summit Campus) and at the Comprehensive Cancer Center (Herrick Campus). The Genetic Counselor will oversee and participate in the counseling of patients on all genetically related matters including: risk assessment, overview of genetic testing, test results and implications, suggested follow-up and clinical trials enrollment. The Genetic Counselor will also be responsible for maintaining professional relationships with referring clinicians, excellent patient service and educating both the community and clinical members on genetic counseling and testing updates.

Qualifications

Education, Licensures and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health science, genetic counseling or related field required

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling required

  • American Board of Genetic Counseling - ABGC required

Experience:

  • One to three years experience as a genetic counselor required

  • Prior experience working with cancer patients preferred

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Understanding of clinical applications and standards necessary to provide comprehensive genetic services and counseling that incorporate the most recent literature and research.

  • Previous experience in cancer genetics preferred.

  • Understanding of insurance and billing systems preferred.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to present at public speaking engagements.

  • Excellent medical documentation skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a wide range of staff, including clerical staff, peers, senior management and physicians.

  • Excellent customer service skills; appreciation of the impact of the health care experience on patients and family members of all ages.

  • IT/Computer skills; proficiency in the use of electronic learning technologies.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Product: Excel, Word, Power Point and Access and the electronic health record (EPIC).

  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs and services.

  • Ability to collaborate with patients, families, and professionals.

  • Ability to build positive working relationships within the medical center, clinics, and community.
