Sutter Health Medical Assistant - Cancer Risk Genetics (LIMTED-TERM, Part-Time, Day Shift) in Sacramento, California



This position serves as the Genetics Medical Assistant to the Genetics Counselor. He/she will assist with coordination of care for patients seen in the Cancer Risk Department serving as a non-clinical resource and liaison for patients and their families. The Genetics Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting in all aspects of patient care, including dissemination of consult notes. The Genetics Medical Assistant will also provide assistance in educational activities

The Genetics Medical Assistant will partner with the Cancer Risk Program Clerk to resolve patient scheduling issues

Principal Accountabilities

  • Resolve patient scheduling issues.

  • Request and/or resolve insurance authorizations for complex gene testing.

  • Phone contact with patients and family members regarding genetic counseling/consult appointments, genetic testing or follow-up purposes.

  • Assisting genetic counselors with all aspects of patient intake, genetic counseling and documentation

  • Work independently coordinating patient care and patient visits.

  • Interview patients and document personal and family medical history.

  • Preparation of letters of medical necessity.

  • Generates appropriate form letters and attachments to patients, referring physicians and others at the time of referral and evaluation outcome.

  • Contact laboratories to determine all necessary steps for gene testing for specific genes, and act as a liaison with laboratories to make sure all samples and required forms and consents are completed and received.

  • Research and complete searches for relevant articles and follow up database with mutations

  • Preparing blood samples for transportation to laboratories within and outside of Sutter Health

  • Preparation of family genetic counseling reports ยท

  • Document pedigrees in Progeny or other pedigree software programs.

  • Create and maintain mutation/variant database and maintain sample database.

  • Assists in other oncology departments when needed.

  • Support the outreach and education function for the department to provide counseling and testing.



Education including Licensure/ Certification/ Registration

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Bachelors degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

  • BLS Healthcare provider is required.

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) or eligibility for certification preferred.

  • Must pass pre-screening testing prior to hire, new hire clinical training and testing and Basic Skills Assessment annually thereafter.


  • Knowledge of scope of practice for Medical Assistants in the State of California. Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations. Knowledge of clinical protocols for vital signs. Knowledge of normal values for vital signs (Blood Pressure, Pulse, Respirations, Temperature). Knowledge of medical positioning for patients.

  • Knowledge of scheduling practices/referrals for physician offices preferred. Knowledge of effective teamwork dynamics between front and back office staff. Must have passed the SMF Pre-Screen Test for Clinical Assistants prior to hire.


  • 5-7 years of experience coordinating diagnostic imaging services in an acute care setting is preferred.

  • Combination of education and experience sufficient to perform primary responsibilities as would be typically obtained in a 2-year Medical Assistant Program. Two to three (2-3) years of previous practical experience as a Medical Assistant in a Physician's office preferred.


  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both over the telephone and in person.

  • Ability to deal sensitively and effectively with patients.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Excellent customer service and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work well both independently, with little supervision, and in a team setting.

  • Experience managing multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Spanish speaking a plus

  • Ability to be crossed trained and support multiple oncology departments when needed.
