The Per Diem Nurse Lactation Consultant has primary accountabilities for patient consultation in the Lactation Program. As a leader of the Lactation process, the Per Diem Nurse Lactation Consultant participates in and coordinates patient care delivery, in collaboration with the health professional team.

The Per Diem Nurse Lactation Consultant functions within the full scope of licensure/ certification, implements the lactation patient education process to include the following: to assess patient and family needs, develop a plan of care based on assessment; coordinate the development of a multidisciplinary plan of care as appropriate; facilitate implementation of the plan of care; and review and evaluate the plan of care.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a related

field is preferred.

Current California RN licensure is required.

Continuing education/training in area of specialty is preferred.

Current status as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant required.

Valid CPR “C” Certification “for health care provider” is required.

NRP Certification preferred for Nurse.

Experience:

Clinical lactation experience with consultation of nursing mother is required.

Prior experience working in an outpatient setting is preferred.

Experience working with a multidisciplinary team is preferred.

Specialty lactation experience is desirable.

Experience with data entry and computer programs preferred.

Knowledge:

Demonstrated basic knowledge of obstetrical/gynecological and pediatrics is required.

Basic knowledge of unit specific age criteria for multicultural patient population is required.

Demonstrated knowledge of in-group dynamic is required.

Demonstrated knowledge in child development is preferred.

Knowledge in adult learning principals is required.

Knowledge of breast pumps and other aides is required.

Knowledge of medical referral system is required.

Special Skills/Equipment:

Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills are required.

Must be self-directed in coordination the care plans for patient care.

must have excellent organizational skills and interpersonal skills.

Multilingual skills are desirable.

Demonstrated skills in delegation, leadership and team management concepts preferred.

Unit Specific:

Completion of unit specific orientation

Physical Requirements:

Ability to safely move and transport patients and related medical equipment and devices

individually or as a party of a team.

Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to perform the unit specific essential

functions of this position.

Ability to lift 20 pounds.

Ability to stand 2-3 hours at a time.

Ability to assist patients in proper positioning for breastfeeding in bed and in chair.

Ability to perform correct body mechanics.
