Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation is a not for profit corporation that exists to provide medical services, research and education. The foundation provides the infrastructure for the delivery of physician services, and contracts with a separate corporation comprised of physicians and other care providers to deliver the clinical services. This multi-specialty foundation will provide a platform from which new physicians can be recruited to continue to provide physician services in a nonprofit, community setting. The Foundation's vision is to create a medical group that will deliver high quality, market competitive medical services.

Under the general supervision of the supervisor, this position is responsible for providing genetic counseling in a state-approved prenatal diagnosis center to all assigned clients, including those referred by the California Expanded AFP Screening Program and those who are California Children’s Services clients.

•Provides genetic counseling services to all assigned prenatal and specialty clinic patients on a daily basis including: risk assessment (pregnancy, family and medical history, as well as patient education (procedures, laboratory tests, risks and benefits).

•Provides case management for assigned patients on a daily basis: reporting of normal and abnormal results, and generating consultation letters.

•Coordinates sending of specimens to outside laboratories.

•Assists in the identification and reporting of barriers to program effectiveness and works with clinical staff to provide solutions.

•Provides follow-up counseling as needed in person or by telephone.

•Researches additional risks and communicates information to patients.

•Identifies insurance or billing problems and communicates with insurance coordinator regarding their resolution.

•Generates telephone calls and reports on California Prenatal Screening program patients.

•Interfaces with clients and co-workers in culturally appropriate manner.

•Develops patient education materials.

•Develops counseling policy and procedures.

•Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and in-services.


Education, Licensures, and Certifications:

• Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling required.

• Board certification or eligibility in genetic counseling by either the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling preferred.


• 1-4 years, GENETIC COUNSELOR I, 5-14 years, GENETIC COUNSELOR II,15+ years, GENETIC COUNSELOR III preferred.


• Understanding of clinical applications and standards necessary to provide comprehensive, current genetic services and counseling.

• Familiar with input and data retrieval on computer database.

• Good communication and interpersonal skills, good writing ability.

• Knowledge and experience in the area of teamwork with health professionals.

• Bilingual in Spanish, Mandarin or Cantonese preferred.
