Sutter Health Communications Operator-per diem in San Francisco, California

Primary Purpose:

Under general supervision, coordinates inter- and intra-communications involving patients, physicians, staff, organization, and the public in a polite, courteous, timely and accurate manner. Operates the console equipment and routes calls appropriately, utilizing appropriate resources for information. Develops and maintains awareness of key personnel, department and clinic extensions, and hospital functions. Relays emergency information as appropriate.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Receives incoming console calls within 3 rings, determines correct routing destination and routes calls. Uses appropriate computer and communication equipment to process calls.

  • Receives and process emergency communication notification. Monitors alarms, receives and follows appropriate notification instructions. Operates emergency communication equipment. Becomes and remains familiar with Medical Center disaster and emergency procedures. Prepares necessary documentation.

  • Demonstrates excellent customer service and oral communication skills.

  • Performs well in emergency and atypical situations.

  • Follows departmental procedures and policies.

  • Demonstrates an understanding of and implements oral and written directions.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Previous hospital or medical office experience in a registration function as typically acquired in approximately one year is required.

  • PBX or telephone console experience as typically acquired in approximately one year is required.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with tasks and techniques relevant to a PBX environment including PBX and/or telephone console equipment required.

  • Knowledge of computers and phone dispatching required

  • Requires proficiency in administrative office procedures and protocol; maintenance of filing and office systems.

  • Must have a pleasant speaking voice, clear enunciation, good hearing, and well-developed customer service skills.

  • Requires problem-solving, accuracy, attention to detail, and timeliness.

  • Must be able to remain calm in emergency/unusual circumstances.
